Saying goodbye at home

Everything we wish someone had told us the first time. Read as much or as little as helps.

This is still your decision

A vet can guide you and answer every question, but nobody else decides for your family. It’s okay to feel unsure. Most families do.

How will I know it’s time?

Watch for more bad days than good ones: not eating, trouble standing, pain that medicine no longer eases, or losing interest in the things they love.

What happens on the day

  1. We confirm and call. If you’d like, your vet phones the day before to answer questions.
  2. Your vet arrives. You’ll get texts as they get closer, and they’ll come in quietly.
  3. Time together. Nothing is rushed. Share stories, give treats, sit on the floor together.
  4. Gentle sedation first. Your pet drifts into a deep, comfortable sleep in your arms.
  5. A peaceful goodbye. Your vet explains each step and listens until the heart has stopped.
  6. Gentle care after. We carry your pet with dignity and take them into Angel Paw’s care.

If children or other pets will be there

Kids can ask every question, or none. There’s no script to follow. Simple, true words help: “Bailey’s body stopped working, and he won’t wake up.”

  • Under 5: keep it short and reassuring. A hug or a drawing is a lovely goodbye.
  • 6 to 12: answer honestly. Many want to be there; some prefer to say goodbye before.
  • Teens: let them choose, and include them in decisions like aftercare.
  • Other pets: letting them sniff and see often helps them understand, and eases searching afterward.

Grieving before goodbye

Feeling loss while your pet is still here is common, and it has a name: anticipatory grief. Be gentle with yourself, and make room for the good days you still have.

What to say to a friend

Say their pet’s name. Share a memory. “I’m so sorry, Bailey was lucky to have you” means more than any advice.

Ways to remember them

A memorial page, a paw print on the mantel, a tree planted in their favorite spot, or a walk on their favorite route.
